
SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 20

Sprouse, Facemyer, Minear, Oliverio, Sharpe, Minard, Kessler,
Edgell, Anderson, McCabe, Bowman, Bailey, Craigo, Jackson, Love
and Tomblin, Mr. President)
Designating March, 2001, as "Professional Social Work Month".

Whereas, Through the actions of social workers in the United
States who saw injustice and inspired others to act, such public
laws as Social Security, child labor laws, the minimum wage, the
40-hour work week, Medicare, unemployment insurance and the humane
treatment of persons with mental illness were enacted for the
betterment of our society; and

Whereas, West Virginia's professional social workers provide
valuable services in the areas of health, mental health, child
welfare and aging. They speak out on behalf of the poor, the
vulnerable and the voiceless; and

Whereas, West Virginia's professional social workers assist
individuals, families and children in coping with their problems
and often help prevent crises, which aids in the conservation of
community resources and lessens the burden on taxpayers; and

Whereas, West Virginia's professional social workers help
protect our children and adults who are at risk of abuse and neglect; therefore, be it

Resolved by the Senate:

That the Senate hereby designates March, 2001, as
"Professional Social Work Month"; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Senate recognizes the tremendous
public service of West Virginia's professional social workers; and,
be it

Further Resolved, That the Senate commends our state's social
workers who are lifelines for West Virginia's poor, vulnerable,
ill, aged and voiceless citizens; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward
a copy of this resolution to the West Virginia Chapter of the
National Association of Social Workers.
